Problem Found, Emergency Averted!

Last week I was flying my Cessna from Texas to Delaware and ran into a problem after takeoff from our midpoint stop in Tennessee. After climbing  to 4000 feet, my oil temperature suddenly shot up and oil streaked up the windshield. As a pilot I was trained to quickly look at my instruments, determine what was going on and take corrective action. I leveled off to bring my oil temperature down, ensured the plane was flying safely, checked for nearby places to land if needed, and then contacted Memphis Center with a request to return to the airport we’d just left—it was only about 10-15 minutes away. As we turned around and headed back, the oil temperature dropped into normal range, the cylinders reported normal, and the Memphis Center folks were helpfully calling out alternate airports if I needed one. There was no weather and the plane was flying fine, so we entered the traffic pattern at the airport we’d left, dropped the landing gear, touched down and taxied to the ramp. We were on the ground safely and now it was time to figure out what had gone wrong. There was a small audience gathered. Apparently, the oil had caused quite a trail of smoke as we came in.

There was oil around the propeller, spinner and down the side of the airplane, in addition to the smears on the windshield and cowl. A crowd of people gathered around while I removed my upper cowl. It quickly became obvious that the seal on the propeller governor had failed, allowing oil to escape. The Aircraft and Powerplant Mechanic at the field took off the Propeller Governor to get it rebuilt and we found a rental car and drove the remaining distance to our Delaware office. It was a long day (and night!), and the experience confirmed a lot of what I learned in Pilot training. Flying is still better than driving.

Oh wait. While true, what I meant to say is that expert maintenance and timely upgrades are what keep planes flying! And sometimes, though the Cessna is not yet ready to retire, new equipment can be custom-tailored to your mission.
